NOOK 3: The Simple Touch Reader?

B&N plans to launch a new e-book reader today to better compete against Amazon. The company has already had a lot of success with NOOK Color. Our sources tell us the new device won’t be a tablet but an e-ink e-reader. According to CNET, the new NOOK will cost $139, matching Kindle 3 WiFi’s price. Allegedly, the device will be called “The Simple Touch Reader”

From the look of it, NOOK 3 will have a 6-inch Pearl e-ink display. It has taken B&N a lot of time to finally challenge Kindle 3 though. B&N does intend to lower the price of first generation NOOK to $119 to go after Kindle with special offers too. Of course, it is very naive for B&N to assume Amazon won’t drop Kindle prices yet again to halt NOOK 3’s momentum.

Amazon is not taking its eyes off the prize though. It is expected to introduce 2 Android tablets to challenge iPad, NOOK Color, and other top tablets around. At this point, we are not sure what feature “The Simple Touch Reader” will specifically have. But its release could lead to Amazon finally dropping Kindle’s price to under $100.

Got any feature suggestions? Please share them below.
