NOOK SDK Out, 18,000 Nook Colors Manufactured per day?

Most experts believe the e-book reader market to be a two way horse. It just happens that B&N NOOKis not one of those horses. Apple iPad and Amazon Kindle may have stolen NOOK’s thunder, but B&N is still serious about the NOOK project. Just a few days ago, B&N released the first version of NOOK SDK. NOOK may have been hacked to run regular Android apps already. Nevertheless, NOOK SDK will enable developers to take full advantage of what this e-reader has to offer to bring their apps to it.

NOOK SDK includes Android Virtual Device Emulator, and Android Debug Bridge (ADB), and some sample code to get developers started faster with their first application. While Android is not as tablet friendly as it needs to be at this point (Android 3 will be), NOOK SDK should enable coders to optimize their apps for this e-reader. The question at this point is should developers even better with it.

According to B&N chairman, NOOKs are being manufactured at the rate of 18K units per day. Adding the time that it takes to ship these devices to the U.S. (from China), B&N won’t sell too many of these units. Still, Forrester Research forecasts
B&N will have sold 2M NOOK units by the end of 2010. These are not Kindle or iPad like numbers, but there is some hope for this product line. NOOK SDK won’t be a game changer but should give NOOK a shot to stay relevant for the near future.
