Project Gutenberg Founder Passes Away

Anyone who has looked for free e-books online should know about Project Gutenberg. Michael Hart, the founder of this amazing site, has passed away at the age of 64. Michael Hart’s project now holds thousands of copyright free e-books. As Dr. Gregory B. Newby put it in Mr. Hart’s obituary:

Michael S. Hart left a major mark on the world. The invention of eBooks was not simply a technological innovation or precursor to the modern information environment. A more correct understanding is that eBooks are an efficient and effective way of unlimited free distribution of literature. Access to eBooks can thus provide opportunity for increased literacy. Literacy, and the ideas contained in literature, creates opportunity.

The e-book industry has not reached where it has overnight. Many innovators and publishers have worked hard to get the industry moving. Michael Hart has certainly left his mark. Thanks to him, we all get to download from the thousands of free books available online to read on our Kindles, smart-phones, and tablets. The journey will continue but lets not forget those who helped the industry reach this point.
