Amazon Working on a Phone?

Amazon has already made its presence known in the tablet PC market with the Kindle Fire. In fact, it plans to bring the second generation Kindle Fire to the market in August. But that is not all Amazon is focused on. According to Bloomberg, the company plans to release its own smartphone. Amazon’s smartphone will compete with the iPhone and Android smartphones.
The smartphone business can be quite tricky with all the patent fights going on. Amazon is working behind the scenes to acquire patents that would cover it against allegations of infringement. The strategy does make a lot of sense. Amazon has used its budget tablet and e-readers to sell content (song, books, and movies).
It will be interesting to see how Amazon markets this phone (we assume it will be called a Kindle phone). From the sound of it, the device won’t be an iPhone killer but a budget alternative. There is no word on when this phone will be released.
