With all the success that e-book publishers have had in the past couple of years, it is easy to forget about the struggles of the e-book industry just a few years ago. Sony Reader was the leader of the pack among e-book readers back then. But it was clear Sony’s device and business model were not the cure to the e-book industry’s problem. Amazon Kindle and Apple iPad now enable more people to enjoy their e-books at home and on the road. With Google launching its eBook Store, iPad 2 coming soon, and Amazon working on cheaper Kindles, the sky’s the limit for this industry.

The above infographic by ebookfriend.ly demonstrates how far e-books have come in the past 40 years. Nowadays, e-books outnumber hardcover and even paperbacks in sales. That trend is here to stay as more sophisticated e-book readers are released to the market. Some may still resist e-books at this point. But it is only a matter of time before e-books completely take over.
