B&N Targets The Education Market with Nookstudy

Amazon has been trying hard to conquer the education market with Kindle DX. It has not been successful so far. Barnes & Noble is not expected to introduce a larger screen nook in the near future, but it does intend to debut NOOKstudy. NOOKstudy is a free application for PC and Mac that lets students download digital text-books to their computers and keep track of everything related to their classes on them.

NOOKstudy lets students view multiple text-books at the same time. It keeps track of highlights and makes them search-able too. The software seems to have the potential to be a hit among college students. It does come down to how B&N prices those digital text-books. Considering that students won’t be able to resell their digital e-books, paying $100+ to view them on a computer may not be that tempting of an offer.

It’s not clear why B&N is using the term NOOK in this product. Our best guess is that these digital text-books can be viewed on a NOOK reader too (B&N has not confirmed this). It wouldn’t be surprising if B&N partnered up with a netbook maker to offer NOOKstudy on future netbook models (similar to what Amazon did with ASUS netbooks). Details are still sketchy about this product, but it does have a chance to succeed if B&N plays its cards right. NOOKstudy is expected to debut in August.
