Will Microsoft Surface with Windows RT Go for $199?

A few weeks ago, we heard a rumor about the upcoming Surface tablet costing close to $1000. That was hugely disappointing as the product would have no chance to compete with those devices. The latest rumors suggest just the opposite. It seems Microsoft may be thinking about going the nuclear option and release its tablet with Windows RT for $199. Of course, what the rumors don’t explain is how Microsoft can possibly afford to keep its losses low enough for this to work.

Most of us expected the Surface to cost around $500. That’s what Microsoft suggested anyway when the Surface tablets were announced. The company is expected to use top of the line hardware in its tablets. That makes pulling off a $199 tablet very difficult. Let’s not forget that Microsoft has many hardware partners that would simply be devastated by this move.

I fully expect Microsoft’s new tablet to cost more than $199. But it will not be surprising if the company goes with that price to stay as aggressive as possible. The problem is once a price point is established with consumers, Microsoft will have a difficult time selling more expensive tablets.

What’s your take? Should Microsoft sell its Windows RT tablet for $199?
