When Will We See Kindle Video?

If you have been paying attention to the news, everyone’s been talking about iPod Video and how it will change the dynamics of camcorder market as well as the mp3 market. While Apple has tried to stay on the edge of what’s possible with its iPhone and iPod families, Amazon has not jumped on the latest technologies with Kindle. I have talked about in the past about the need for Amazon to get more innovative on using video and social networking technologies to push Kindle to the next level. It’s true that Kindle is an e-book reader, but it doesn’t have to be just that.

Amazon current supports e-books and audio-books, so you won’t have trouble reading your books or listening to your audio files on your gadget. What you can’t do on a Kindle is watching video-books (or training videos). Video books are the future. More companies are now putting out video content for anyone who’s interested in learning new things. Vbooks won’t replace regular books completely, but they give us consumers another way to learn new things. But of course Kindle is not good enough at this point to display videos.

Amazon has been a bit slow in jumping on the social reading phenomenon as well. Kindle isn’t exactly Twitter or Facebook friendly, and Amazon has not made a significant effort to allow social reading on Kindle. Some argue that Amazon is currently spending time building a solid foundation for Kindle to introduce these features on a later date. In order to get there, we are going to need a better Kindle screen and more processing power. It’s also not clear how Amazon can enable these features without taking away from Kindle’s battery life.

Adding video capability to Kindle may not be on the cards for the near future but it’s a move that Amazon will eventually make. It’s going to be a challenge for Amazon to fit videos on a Kindle and keep things unchanged. The e-book market seems to be more mature than the v-book market, but Amazon will eventually make the move and introduce Kindle Video. It’s only a matter of time.
