HP Hurricane To Challenge E-Readers?

HP Slate was expected to put up a tough challenge against Apple iPad and other e-readers. It was a very interesting looking device that was going to run Windows 7 and act as a portable laptop/tablet hybrid. But HP was always going to have trouble providing the right balance of power, performance, and energy efficiency on its device with Windows 7 on-board. Besides, HP has bought Palm, and it would make sense for the company to give its webOS a chance to succeed. It seems HP is not ready to give up on the tablet market. It’s just readjusting its plans for a major assault.

According to Examiner, HP may be in the process of implementing a small change in plans by working on a webOS tablet (to be released in Q3-10). Code-named “Hurricane,” HP is expected to test webOS’ potential with this new slate. Considering that HP Slate was supposed to challenge e-readers, it’s not too hard to imagine that HP will be still going after that market. Of course, don’t expect HP to add E-ink technology to its slate.

Tablets are gaining some momentum among e-book lovers. But the most fundamental issue still remains: can tablets satisfy e-book lovers considering that they do not take advantage of E-ink technology? Moreover, tablets seem to be too distracting for e-book junkies. Barack Obama agrees with that too. But do people really want a dedicated e-reader when they can get their hands on toys such as the iPad?

Your take: do you find iPad and all its bells and whistles too distracting?
