Kyobo eReader with Mirasol Display (Videos)

We have been waiting quite a while to test Qualcomm’s Mirasol displays. The Kyobo eReader happens to be an e-reader with Mirasol Display technology. Tweaktown was one of the few sites that got a chance to play with this e-reader. Mirasol displays do not have backlight. Instead they reflect natural ambient light in your surroundings to show content in color. The Kyobo eReader has a 5.7 inch screen with a 1024 x 768 resolution. It has a Snapdragon S2 processor on-board.

You can clearly see from these videos that e-book readers of this type are not designed to replace tablets such as the iPad. But they make great educational tools. The below video demonstration was provided by the guys at NetbookNews. The colors do seem decent but they could probably be made to be more alive.

Amazon has not released a color E-ink device yet. The timing could be right next year. Color e-readers won’t be tablet killers though. It does seem companies such as Amazon and B&N will be involved in both e-reader and tablet markets for the next few years.

What’s your take? Are you impressed with the Kyobo eReader?
