Do Consumers Want Enhanced E-books?

Many experts have been predicting for a while that enhanced e-books are the future of this industry (books bundle with multi-media content). A recent survey by Cathedral Rock Publishing suggests that e-book buyers are looking to get their hands on enhanced books with audio and video content. The survey involved 105 users and was developed to understand the reasons people do/don’t take advantage of e-book content.

Arguably, the size of the sample in this survey is not large enough for us to make conclusions from this study. That said, one third of those surveyed suggested they preferred the feeling of a real book to the experience ebooks offer. Many of those who participated in this survey did not like reading books on their smartphones.

Not surprisingly, more than three quarters of respondents (77%) suggested they would like to see music added to their e-books. 56% wanted to have access to video in their books with 58% being in favor of the inclusion of color graphics. Interestingly, many of the respondents suggested they are willing to pay much more for enhanced e-books. Maybe e-book publishers should rely on developing enhanced e-books instead of raising the prices of their e-books.

We should not read too much into this study considering the size of the sample. However, this is just a no brainer: people want more from their e-books. The sky’s the limit for e-book publishers who understand the future of the e-book industry.
