eBook Sales Increase by 115%?

A few years ago, many folks were not too eager to completely switch to digital books from paperback and hardcover books. Amazon Kindle and tablets such as iPad have changed all that. E-book stores are having much more success these days. Amazon is already selling a ton of e-books. Apple is interested in its piece of the pie. No wonder the e-book industry’s fortunes are looking rosy.

According to Association of American Publishers (AAP), e-book net sales have gone up by 115% in January 2011 in comparison to the previous year. Online stores are having success selling audio-books too. Here are some of the takeaways from this study:

  • Net ebook sales went from $32.4 Million to $69.9M (Jan 2010 vs. Jan 2011).
  • Adult Hardcover fell from $55.4M to $49.1M (-11.3%). Adult paperback category dropped by 19.7%.
  • Sales of downloadable audio-books rose by 8.8%.

In almost every category, hardcover and paperback book sales are down. This is not surprising. Even though, Amazon and other e-book companies have not always kept the promise of keeping their prices under $9.99, people are starting to feel more comfortable reading on Kindle, iPad, Nook, and other similar devices. The positive momentum for this industry is expected to continue for the foreseeable future.
