Amazon To Improve Kindle Software, Add Real Page Numbers

The Kindle software has come a long way over the past couple of years. It currently has got a more polished interface and is quite fast. It still has some short-comings, some of which Amazon will address with its next software update. New Kindle and Kindle 3G model will soon give their owners the ability to share their public notes with the world. Publishers, authors, and readers can choose to opt-in to take advantage of this new feature. Just make sure you follow the right people on Kindle.amazon.com to start viewing their public notes.

Real page numbers are coming to Kindle as well. Those of you who have read plenty of e-books on your e-reader have probably realized that your device does not display real pages. The percentage and relative page information are helpful. But they are not useful if you are planning to compare your notes with the physical edition of your e-book. Here is what Amazon had to say about book page numbers:

Our customers have told us they want real page numbers that match the page numbers in print books so they can easily reference and cite passages, and read alongside others in a book club or class.  Rather than add page numbers that don’t correspond to print books, which is how page numbers have been added to e-books in the past, we’re adding real page numbers that correspond directly to a book’s print edition.

Amazon wants its customers to rate the books they read. As a part of this update, Kindle users will be prompted to review their books once they finish them up. An improved magazine and newspaper layout has been added to Kindle too. Unfortunately, it seems these changes are Kindle 3 exclusive at this point. Kindle DX owners may have to wait a while to get these enhancements.

Your thoughts: how would you further improve Kindle software?
