Sony Unveils Flexible Electronic Paper Display

Sony may have lost a bit of momentum in the e-reader market, but it is by no means giving up the fight. For starters, it has recently refreshed its e-book readers, making them more competitive against top e-readers on the market. What’s more exciting is the latest flexible e-paper prototype that Sony recently presented in Asia (see the above picture). These e-papers are thin, flexible, and energy efficient.

This technology reminds us of Plastic Logic and for a good reason. It takes advantage of plastic substrate to offer a more flexible experience to its users. Ebook readers taking advantage of this technology will be more durable and bring a more realistic reading experience to consumers. Using this technology should allow Sony to develop super thin and light e-readers in the future.

Sony has not announced whether it plans to bring this technology to its e-readers. But it is clear that Sony has big plans for its flexible e-paper technology. Can the company keep its readers’ prices low using this technology? That’s not clear at this point.
