$149 Nook to Debut [Update: Kindle Going for $189]

We have been waiting for quite a while for Amazon and Barnes & Noble to drop their e-readers’ prices. While B&N is still selling Nook for $259, BestBuy has started taking pre-orders for a $149 Nook. The specifications of this device are very identical to the original Nook but only WiFi functionality is offered. This move seems to be a response to Kobo Reader, which is being offered for only $120 at Borders [Update: Amazon has responded by dropping Kindle’s price to $189]

This is good move by B&N to stay competitive while putting the final touches to Nook 2. Amazon is likely to follow suit and offer a cheaper model of Kindle in a short while [Update: for now Amazon has dropped Kindle’s price by $70]. Let’s face it. A lot of e-book reader fans will be satisfied with a device that does not come with a 3G connection as long as it delivers in other areas. nook Lite certainly does.

Kobo Reader fans have something to cheer about too. Its Android client has finally made it to Android Market. Considering that Kobo’s goal is to offer e-books on all platforms, this is a good step forward. It’d be interesting to see how Amazon responds to these developments. A Kindle price drop seems to be on the horizon. Just as we wrote this piece, Amazon dropped Kindle’s price to $189.

Your take: nook Lite or Kobo Reader? What’s your choice?
