Kobo Price Drop, Now $99 at Borders

Are you looking for a decent e-book reader under $100? No problem. Kobo Reader has just had its price cut to $99 for a limited time on Borders. Borders.com is getting ready to release Kobo WiFi by the end of October, so this price cut was not unexpected.

new Kobo Wireless eReader allows consumers to browse more than 1.5 million books in the Borders eBook store and update their digital library wirelessly, directly from the eReader device, a smartphone or the Borders Desktop Application. With the intuitive control pad and a built-in library-management system, customers can easily navigate and organize their library by title, date last read and author. In addition, customers can add documents using an SD card, Adobe Digital Editions, or drag-and-drop. The eReader also supports EPUB and PDF documents

Kobo Reader may not be the best e-reader on the market, but it has its merits. Unfortunately, it does not have 3G or WiFi functionality, so even at $99, it may not be worth it. Not when Kindle 3.0 WiFi offers much more functionality for only $40 more.

Here are some of the offers that Borders.com is offering to encourage more people to adopt its e-readers and tablets:

  • $25 Gift Card with the Purchase of a Velocity® Micro Cruz™ Tablet
  • Five free eBooks with the pre-order of the Kobo™ Wireless eReader
  • Free Sony Reader cover with built-in light w/ Sony Readers
  • $30 off Velocity® Micro Cruz & Kobo Reader

Borders.com is being aggressive with its push to get more people on board with its e-readers. Unfortunately, Amazon has set the bar very high for other competitors in this market. Kobo Reader probably needs more features at a lower price to properly challenge Amazon Kindle and B&N Nook.

Your take: are you impressed with Borders.com’s offers?
