Hybrid Phone with E-Ink and AMOLED: Could It Work?

We have seen E-ink technology used in e-readers and tablets. There are e-paper displays that people can pick up to make their laptops more outdoors-friendly. Wouldn’t it be nice if we all could take advantage of e-paper displays on our phones too? Second Life Mobile Phone Concept demonstrates just that. Smartphones are known to have lousy battery life. Even the best of them won’t last consumers more than a few hours. This concept uses the AMOLED technology in active mode. When the device is running low on battery, the screen gets switched to E-ink. E-ink is an ultra-lower power consuming technology, so this all could very well work.

As the phone runs out of battery, its screen becomes more transparent, reminding users to charge their device. This is certainly an interesting concept, but it is not quite clear whether we will ever get such devices. Having such screens can make reading books on smart-phones much more convenient. We won’t be holding our breath on that though.

Would you invest in dual mode phones?
