Amazon Rolls Out ‘Sunshine Deals’ for Kindle

Many Kindle owners have not been happy about the agency model adopted by certain publishers and how Amazon prices its e-books. Amazon may not be able to reduce all its e-book prices dramatically but it is experimenting with ebook pricing in cooperation with select publishers. Amazon has launched Sunshine Deals, offering numerous best-selling titles for as low as $0.99.

Amazon’s Sunshine Deals do look exciting. But most new books are not included in this promotion. Those publishers that use the agency model do not seem to be playing along with this either. Pricing e-books is not a simple task. Many assume that by asking for $9.99 for each and every book, publishers can end up making more money. On the other hand, $2.99 e-books could reduce piracy and encourage more people to invest in digital e-books.

Many independent authors understand that pricing their books too high could hurt their businesses. It is the large publishers that keep asking for titles to go for higher than $9.99. The same folks also complain about e-book piracy and platforms such as Kindle not being profitable enough for them. Let’s hope they come to their senses for the good of the e-book industry.

What’s your favorite Kindle Sunshine deal?
