Amazon’s Curious Kindle DX Mistake

In case you have missed it, Amazon is already shipping Kindle DX graphite. The device has a better display and is expected to be more in demand considering the price cut that it has received. The trouble is Amazon is still selling the old Kindle DX. This is the first time that Amazon has not discontinued an older generation Kindle while selling its new model. When Kindle 2 was released, Amazon immediately discontinued the first generation Kindle (the same was the case when global Kindles were announced).

This is clearly a mistake or a bad decision by Amazon. Selling Kindle DX-2G for only $20 less than the latest model can only lead to consumer confusion. It seems Amazon does not intend to offer the latest generation Kindle DX in multiple colors. If that is indeed the case, Amazon needs to do a better job disclosing the fact that the white Kindle DX models are inferior devices to Kindle DX graphite.

Amazon could use older Kindle DX to push the Kindle platform much more effectively. Offering it as a bundle to loyal customers could help (unfortunately free Kindles for Prime customers was just a rumor). The current pricing scheme is confusing to say the least.

Your take: should Amazon offer Kindle DX-2G for much less or  just discontinue them?
