Plastic Logic QUE Reader is On Its Way

I have been a fan of Plastic Logic’s product since I saw one of their early presentations at DEMO. I found the device to be a great tool for business professionals (on paper). But I expected it to be already released to the market (and maybe be on its way to second generation). Instead of getting its product to the market quickly, Plastic Logic has waited and improved the device in every aspect to give itself a better chance to succeed in the crowded market of e-book readers. But the wait period seems to be finally over.

Plastic Logic seems to be hitting the final phase as it gets ready to display the devices at the CES 2010. It’s sad that we don’t get this device ready to go for this holiday season, but it’s still good news that QUE is finally coming out. Here is what Plastic Logic had to say in its press release:

The sleek QUE connects users with all their favorite business and leisure publications, newspapers, periodicals and books via USB or wirelessly through AT&T’s 3G network and WiFi. And it supports all the document formats businesses use most, like PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and many, many more.

The QUE store offers the most significant collection of business reading available on any eReader. The QUE store is powered by Barnes & Noble, the worlds’ largest eBookstore.

So what’s different about QUE? A wireless connection from AT&T, and a content partnership with Barnes & Noble. From early prototypes, we know what to expect from this reader. It has a huge screen and is tailor-made for business professionals. So it’s expected to be a niche device. Still, it’d be interesting to see whether QUE can survive 2010, which seems to be a year of intense competition for e-book readers. Will it? I leave that for you to decide.

P.S. Here is a demonstration of an early prototype for Plastic Logic Reader in case you are not familiar with the device:
