Apple Embraces The Cloud

Companies such as Amazon and Google have been quick to adopt cloud computing. Apple may be a tad bit late but it did deliver some very good news during WWDC 2011 with the introduction of iCloud and its new operating systems. iCloud is an innovative service that allows users to access their songs on all their devices. It can also be used to create backups of apps and documents.

iCloud users will have the ability to access their iBooks purchase history on their iOS device. It will allow for synchronized reading experience (start reading on one device, finish on another). iOS 5 will have a News stand for those of you who want to catch up with your favorite magazine subscriptions or news sources on your handheld device.

Apple did add a reading list feature to iOS 5. It can be used to keep track of important articles for future references (similar to services such as Read It Later). The best part is one does not have to own a PC or Mac to get the most out of iPad or iPhone after these updates.

Apple iPad still remains our second favorite e-reading device. At the same time, Apple has taken a few good steps forward by adopting and integrating the cloud into its platforms. Apple iBooks still remains a work in progress though.
