Real Books more fun than Kindle Books?

Product Image

I had a very interesting discussion with a colleague of mine about the difference between experiencing a real book versus reading one on Kindle. Now, he is a late adopter. He bought his Kindle before it went out of stock. But he brought up a very interesting point. He told me that he uses Kindle for technical books but for novels he prefers to read the real thing. Now, I am not going into the details behind his reasoning but there is a good argument to be made here. A lot of people still connect better with a real book than an eBook. If you ask these folks, they talk about how they have more fun reading a paper book than a Kindle book.

I don’t necessarily agree with the above argument but here is my question for you. If  there was only one book that you wanted read, would you rather read it on a Kindle or would you prefer the real thing?

Depends

If the book
relies on graphics
or is table heavy
It’s unlikely
to present well
on the Kindle

Poetry formatting
seems to be a persistent problem

Other than those
I prefer the Kindle

I’ve had mine since the 1st day
and consider it now part
of the way I live

Kindle version without hesitation. Unless there are graphics in the book, I would infinitely rather have a Kindle version than a paper book.

When I’m reading a paper book, I’m more conscious of how much I’m reading. It takes longer to turn the page, which is more likely to make me look up from the book, check the time, etc. And no, it’s not an issue of paying attention. it’s not like I’ll get distracted every page turn, but it’s more likely to happen with a book than Kindle. With Kindle, I’m hitting the next page button as soon as I start the last line on the page I’m on, and by the time the page is refreshed, I’m ready for the first line again. I don’t have that disconnect, brief as it may be. A distraction is still a distraction, no matter how small or quick. This makes the Kindle a much more immersive reading experience for me.

I’ve read numerous books on the Kindle. However, I’ve found that I would rather read hard copies of those books that I like to mark up and comment on as I read. While I use the highlighting and notes features of the Kindle they just cannot replace a good red pencil or pen! If I’m reading a book simply to gain information or to be entertained, I’ll use the Kindle.
