The timing was a big issue, but you can't just make minor changes and target a market segment effectively. Students have different needs than let's say a 70 year old man. I do wonder what happens when Apple comes out with its iTablet. Since it will be supporting iPhone apps, will Amazon allow Kindle for iPhone on that tablet?By the way, try Livescribe Pen.
