Plastic Logic Slimmer than Kindle DX

If you have been following this blog lately, you probably know that I am a big fan of Plastic Logic. Since its debut on DEMO a while back, I have been hoping for Plastic Logic Reader to mount a real challenge to Kindle DX. Not every e-book reader has the chance to become the next Kindle killer but I have always thought that Plastic Logic has the potential to play a role in the e-book market. In the past few months, Plastic Logic has made significant improvement to its device. Not only the device is thinner than Kindle 2.0 (0.27 inches thick), it targets the business market to avoid a head to head clash with Kindle for now (see the pictures here).

As much as Plastic Logic has progressed, I see a product that is falling behind the market fast. Plastic Logic had the chance to be a real challenger to Kindle. But instead the folks behind it don’t seem to pay a whole lot of attention to being agile in this fast changing market. And let’s not forget that as good as Plastic Logic is when it comes to design and hardware, it is still not going to beat Amazon in the e-book market nor will it be able to stand up to companies such as Apple and Sony.

Plastic Logic does remind me of UGOBE. An innovative company that released one product and went out of business before getting to release its second one. I sure do hope that Plastic Logic will follow a different path and hits its mark in the e-book industry. But with no release date in sight, Plastic Logic Reader seems to be still a work in progress. Let’s hope the company doesn’t find the e-book market landscape too tough to navigate in a year’s time.
