So I was one of the guys who bought two Kindles when the device came out. I wanted one to be for reading purposes and another one to give away as a present. Let’s say things didn’t work out the way I expected and I had to keep the second Kindle too. Boy that was the right decision. My first Kindle stopped functioning properly a couple of months ago, and like any buyer I assumed that Amazon would have a repair service for Kindle. To my surprise, the Amazon folks told me that there was no such service or repair facility.
I took it upon myself to repair my Kindle by myself. I used a repair guide to help me through the way. In the end, I ended up having to recycle my old Kindle (I broke the screen by accident). But here is the moral of the story. It would be unthinkable for a company such as Amazon to not repair their own product. I would even take a $100 discount to trade my old Kindle in for a new one (or for a few books). Can you imagine Apple not providing support for the iPhone? It’s unthinkable.
Your take: as good as Amazon is in taking care of their customers, is it logical to pay $350 fee for a device that won’t be supported once broken? What would you do if your Kindle stopped functioning properly?

I am having the same problems as above- 1st with the Kindle 1 and now with the Kindle two- within a few months of the basic 1 year warranty running out-the screen with no drops-no spills -no pressure put on screen-lines appear and it freezes up
We were one of the 1st to get the Kindle 1 at almost $400 so when it happened to that version – we thought ok so they have improved it- we got a Kindle two for almost $300-to have the exact same problem
now we are being offered a replacement – great deal to get a new Kindle 2 at a discounted price from $269 = ok what is wrong with this- the Kindle 3 world wide is only $189??? ok so I settled on the Kindle 2 to get back to my over 400 books not read- does not come when promised- call again and after another 1 1/2 phone call to customer service- told it will be shipped out- shipped today at a higher charge to me than qouted- Anyone in charge of Customer Service at all?
I have talked so many people when I traveled into a Kindle -Hope I never run into them when they have problems-

I have bought a Kindle in December 2010 in the UK. For a domestic accident it has broken the screen. Could you recommend me any reliable place that I can send the unit for repair? Sincerely, Caboral

I was out of warranty on my Kindle 2 and had a screen which suddenly lost the words on the upper 1/8 of the screen – after I lent it to my son – so I don't know if it was dropped. I called the Kindle help line and they were very helpful. They are sending me a replacement in exchange for my broken one for $89 and free shipping. The prices on new Kindles are only about $139 but saving $40 is $40. The service agent said they can fix some of them after they are returned but they consider it is better to send a new one ummediately in case it is not reparable. Looks like Amazon is getting more customer sensitive as of Dec 2010

I just had the best experience ever with a repair service after calling the 1-866-321-8851 number posted above. My wife's Kindle has black lines on the screen which I'm guessing means it was broken after being dropped from about 18" to the floor. After reading this Blog I assumed I would be given the run around by Amazon and have to buy a new one. But to my surprize: The Amazon representative was pleasant and after I told him I needed to find out how to repair my $489 DX model Kindle that I purchased over a year ago he told me that it was still under warranty and they were shipping one out over night air today! I have just had my faith in Amazon restored!

Well, I'm having the same problem as everyone else, screen freezing up and nothing i do fixes it. My kindle2 is less than a year old and my problem is that I bought it used on ebay and now i'm wondering if I am still covered under the manufacturers warranty. And to add insult to injury I just purchased a book the day it went bad. Guess I will call Amazon and see what happens. So disappointed!!

I take it by reading your complaints that there is no one in these United States of America that can do repair work to a Kindle. My father, being almost blind, forced the electrical plug into the base and broke or stretched the prongs so that the electrical cord will not stay attached to the base for charging unless you sit there and hold it. I would love to get it repaired for him. He has the largest one available so we spent over $500 for nothing?? With the new large fonts, he can read it under his special floor lamp and his Kindle is the last activity he can do other than sitting and waiting on death to knock on his door. Seems that someone out there would have opened a repair store for Kindles by now. Is there any legitimate repair shop that can help????

Have you tried: http://www.portatronics.com/index.php?cat=c87_Ebo…
Also, I have seen some people offering repair services on eBay. I can't recommend any because I have not tested them.

@D Rowland
If your father's Kindle setup was like mine, I assume you mean that the Kindle was connected to a USB cable that connects to the little adapter to a standard power outlet, and that adapter was inserted the wrong way and broke? Why not just buy a new one of those, for $20? http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Replacement-Adapter-…

After the warranty is over, reality sets in, and Kindle repair service, or lack of, is a complete disappointment to customers. If The K were an Apple product, it would have been engineered from the git-go to avoid such an extremely sensitive screen that it has no flexibility to take the normal wear and tear of everyday life. To would-be buyers, let this be a Kindle Kaveat Emptor: Kindle Buyer, Beware! Bad thinking, Jeff Bezos- all those nice fuzzy intro letters we received on our brand new Kindles promised a better future than this. I'm going ipad.

My kindle was fantastic. Hence the past tense. A product of this price should not be so fragile. If I can't tote it around with me, then it is of no use. The whole concept in this product was reading wherever whenever. However, this is not possible as I have learned just moments ago that being jostled by a kid or house cat can kill it forever. The screen is now frozen on Harriet Beecher Stowe. Oh joy. I dont even get to finish my book. Of course the cost to fix it is almost as much as buying a new kindle. I will not be purchasing another after I have realized this immense issue. Of course I am not the only one, this has happened to hundreds of people. It only gets worse, Amazon offers no team or such that can fix it for a fee. Amazon is offering no customer supposrt, and I will never buy, or suggest a product of theirs again. Hundreds of people, literally, have asked wheter I suggest the Nook or Kindle, Nook all the way. I know of a Nook that has been able to survive an 8 year old!

Yesterday I noticed the screen on my Kindle had gone Kaput!
Today I phoned Amazon technical support to report this. I was asked to try to reboot it, which it wouldn`t do.
I was then put through to technical support, I explained to the chap, John, what the problem was. Almost immediately IO was offered a brand new replacement, sent DHL express .
Al;ll I was asked to do was return the Kindle which would be picked up from my address by DHL at a time to suit me.
All this took around 15minutes.!!
fantastic faultless service, thankyou John and Amazon from a very happy customer.

Try doing a HARD RESET:
1. Unplug Kindle from power adapter or computer.
2. Slide and release the power button. The LED light that surrounds the power button will display green for two seconds.
3. Shut down Kindle by sliding and holding the power button for five seconds. The LED light will blink three times. Wait for the screen to go blank, then release the power button.
4. Turn on the Kindle by sliding and releasing the power button.
5. If Kindle is still not working, you can perform a hard reset by sliding and holding the power button for 15 seconds.
6. If Kindle is still unresponsive, try charging Kindle before trying to restart the device once again.

i think you shouldn't attempt to repair a kindle, or any other electronics for that matter, without any experience or knowledge.
i have seen another post on this subject which still recommends Amazon's repair services.

i got my kindle as a present and a few months later i was reading it while multitasking and so then the screen broke accidentally and i checked the pamphlet of the warranty and then it said it doesn't apply to anything accidental or damage done by fires and such that seems pretty stupid to do though cuz of a lot of angry customers who wont buy more products from them and even stupider to not make a store for repairs so as to keep happy customers but noo they don't have one they just want to take as little responsibility as they can so that they can get out of helping you and you end up buying another one if you think about it your probably better off sticking with apple and such cuz they HAVE repair stores.

my kindle is almost one year old, and someone in my house drop it, but no one would admit it: the first time i saw this some part of the carcass was disjointed and when i turned it on, it took a while to show my files, and even showed a progress bar with the tree image on bakcground… since then, some times it work fine, but others, it just won't turn on at all… unless i leave it charging for a while…. DAMN!

My experience is totally contrary to those above – what a relief!!
My wife dropped her kindle DX and the screen is cracked, and is no longer displaying correctly. It's less than 2 months old so we were pretty disappointed. It was absolutely our fault and I'd not expect any equipment to survive that fall.
We used Amazon's online chat, and in about 30 minutes, the support people advised us they would be sending us a replacement Kindle DX, and a pre-paid voucher to return the original broken one back to them.
There are few firms these days who would consider doing this – outstanding service.
Needless to say I'll be looking forwards to adding a Kindle Fire and/or Touch once the initial reviews and hooplah settle down.

My kindle is 1 year and 1 month old as well and is a nice sturdy cover. It dropped off our bed which is about 30" onto a carpet and now the screen is all blitzed. I've tried resetting and nothing. Looking for a repair place I came across this site. I am extremely disappointed at what I Have read and learned here. i wonder if the Nook has the same issues and no way to repair them.

another dissatisfied kindle customer. i have a kindle keyboard that's 15 months old. screen went blank with horizontal & vertical lines. kindle will replace but only for $85. i don't want to buy another one, i want them to replace it. Apple would NEVER do this to their customers. amazing that a company like amazon does this. they just lost another customer. it's a shame too because it was a pretty good product.
