Kindle 3.0: Building a Better Kindle

As you know, we are only a few months away from the release of the next generation Kindle. Kindle 3.0 (not counting DX) will be released sometime next year, and you can expect a lot of changes in design and features. A lot of experts are worried about what could happen as far as in-book advertising is concerned. But a lot of positives could come out of the next generation Kindle as well. I was particularly disappointed with Kindle 2.0 as it did not offer as many new features as I expected. The device is a bit cheaper than before, and it’s designed in a more sleek fashion. But we didn’t get too many earth-shattering changes with Kindle 2. I firmly believe that Kindle 3.0 will offer more new features, and we may finally get support for colored e-books.

With that in mind, what new features do you expect Amazon to work on as far as the next generation Kindle is concerned:

Which device are you more likely to buy this holiday season?

What I really want is integration with Evernote. I use Evernote to hold a lot of articles in various formats as well as entire PDF books. I’d love the ability to do something like tag a note with <> and have it automatically sync up with an ebook reader.
Any ebook that incorporates something like that will have me throwing fistfuls of cash at them.

Folders! Sony has had it forever. Kindle2 can store 1000 books….in one big ugly list you can only sort 2 ways. Title or author. Folders!!!

A second a previous commenter’s “folders” is an absolutely fantastic idea! I would also love to see wireless access that doesn’t need to be 3G (as I live outside the WhisperNet service area) so I could use the internet, download book samples, and view blogs – all of which do not work without WhisperNet and are unavailable via the computer link.

Kindle 2 has some improvements over Kindle1but there were also some glaring ERRORS #1. Removing the SD card slot, #2. Making battery replacement a factory service. 3. No cover.

My biggest concerns that were not addressed in the K1 to K2 upgrade were: #1. NO FOLDERS #2 POOR CONTRAST & TOO FEW FONTS result in poor readability in all but ideal lighting conditions. #3. Security for the credit card associated with One-Click Purchase is non-existent. If a Kindle is lost or stolen, the credit card can be used to make unlimited purchases until Amazon is notified and the Kindle is deregistered. #4. The Web Connection/Email Function is akward, frustrating and hardly worth time required to learn to use it. #5. Advertising shows the Kindle being dropped from approx 5 feet with no apparent damage, but the display is actually very fragile and may crack if even slightly bumped at the wrong angle. Any damaged display voids the warranty. At best this seems to misleading advertising, at worst it may be false advertising.

Did I mention what a BIG step BACKWARDS it was to remove the SD card slot from the Kindle 2?

I’d like it if I get a Kindle in black or dark gray.

Let’s not forget what a BIG step BACKWARDS it was to remove the SD card slot from the Kindle 2.

However, the display is actually quite fragile and may crack if the Kindle is softly/mildly bumped at the just the right angle, in just the right place (example, as you are walking through a door bump the one of the corners closest to the display on the door frame). Any damage to a display voids the warranty. At best this seems to misleading advertising, at worst it may be false advertising.

I bought my Kindle 2 in Oct 2009, I only turn on the wireless to download blogs and go to the Kindle Store. However, I have to charge the battery on Kindle 2 every day. I reported it Kindle Customer Service, they took a report but never responded.

It was a BIG step BACKWARDS it was to remove the SD card slot from the Kindle 2.
