Color Screen E-ink Kindles Coming?

The Amazon Kindle Fire has a lot of merits as a tablet. It is cheap and quite a capable tablet. But it does not have an e-ink display. That means you are going to have a very difficult time using it under direct sunlight. Besides, it is not always easy on the eyes. We have heard a number of rumors about Amazon bringing color e-paper e-readers to the market in the past. But that has not happened yet. Amazon already plans to release a 10 inch Kindle Fire. But Economic Daily News is now suggesting that E-ink Holdings has landed orders for 6 inch color e-reader modules from Amazon.

As Hexus has reported, the shipments are set to begin in March and could ramp up to 3 million units a month. That means we should expect the color screen Kindle to debut in Q3/4 of 2012. Of course, Amazon’s device won’t be the first color e-readers on the market. The Ectaco jetBook e-reader already takes advantage of color e-paper technology.

The Kindle Fire is already a very popular tablet. But there is demand for decent color e-ink displays. It will be interesting to see how color screen Kindles will fare.
