In order to check out a Kindle book from a library, you should get a pin number and a library card. Your favorite library site will most likely tell you how you can use what you borrow. Once you are done with this process, you are going to be redirected to Amazon to choose the device you want to deliver the e-book you have just borrowed to.

How would you improve it?

Many have received a new Kindle with ads as a gift this holiday season. Amazon’s ads are not that annoying. But there are some folks who prefer not seeing them at all. Just like most smartphones, your e-reader can be jailbroken. The process is surprisingly easy. Y42K has published an easy to follow guide that shows how the process can be done fast.

In order to remove ads from your Kindle, you need to delete the .assets folder. That’s where all the dirty work gets handled. By removing this folder and replacing it with a dummy file, you will be able to use your Kindle without having to deal with the ads. Keep in mind that Amazon is not exactly open to its customers using this technique. If you don’t want to anger Amazon, you could always pay a few bucks more ($40 in my case) to unsubscribe from the ads on your Kindle device (you can do so on Manage Your Devices page on Amazon.com).

I seem to be having an issue where my Fire can connect to my router, but my internet’s speed immediately plummets down to where it can only download at 1.0 kb/s. As soon as I make my Kindle forget my network the speed jumps right back up. Downloading 6.1 update now to see if that fixes the issue.

Scott-ross Dailey explained on the Kindle forum. Kindle users are reporting that getting the latest Kindle Fire Update v. 6.2 solves this issue (it can be done over the air). You can also manually upgrade your Amazon Kindle Fire by downloading the latest version of Kindle software. Here are the instructions as provided by Amazon:

Have you experienced any WiFi issues on your Kindle Fire?

• pay attention when passing through security checkpoints: I have been asked to take my Kindle out when passing through security checkpoints only a couple of times. But I am glad I had it in a TSA friendly case. There is no reason not to turn off your Kindle when going through this process.
• turn your Kindle off when asked: any piece of electronics that has an on/off button needs to be turned off during takeoff and once you are landing. At the very least, have your wireless off to be on the safe side.
• pick up a tough case: there are plenty of cases available for Kindle. Picking up a tough case for your trips is a smart idea. Why take any chances when you don’t have to?
• don’t forget your adapter: some folks take their Kindles with them on the plane but put their accessories in their checked luggage. As a rule of thumb, never ever separate your Kindle from its adapter & cables.
• pick up a stand: some people prefer using their Kindles or other gadgets hands-free during their trips. You can pick up a compact and portable stand for your device to handle the job.
• don’t lose sight of your gadget: Kindle is so compact, it is almost too easy to lose it. Don’t just abandon your Kindle when you are on a plane. Also make sure to remind yourself to take it with you when you leave.
• add your contact information to your device: losing your Kindle is not the end of the world. Someone may be able to find it and return it to you. For that to happen, you need to make sure the finder can get your contact information off your device. It never hurts to attach your address label to the front of your Kindle. You may also want to create a file named “Contact Me” and upload it to your Kindle prior to your trip.
• backup everything: it never hurts to create backups of all your e-books (non-Amazon ones) and documents on your Kindle before taking your device with you for a trip. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

As soon as Nook Color was released to the market, hackers started looking for ways to get around the device’s restrictions to install all types of Android apps on the device. It did not take for Nook to get rooted. Once that happened, it was a matter of time before someone got Kindle app for Android to get to work on Nook.

We saw Kindle on Nook Color in action a while ago. Now BlogKindle has published a comprehensive set of instructions on how to get the job done. Apparently, it is not too hard to do:

It took me less than 5 minutes to execute all rooting instructions from NookDevs.com to root the device, enable Android Market, download Kindle for Android and have WhisperSync open the book I was reading on the same place I left it off on my Kindle device.

Nook Color may not be as good an e-book reader as Kindle, but it is a decent entry level Android tablet. B&N can try to keep Kindle off its device. But it has tied its hands by adopting Android.

In the past few months, we have been asked this question so many times: how would someone go about downloading manga and transferring the files to Kindle.

There are plenty of websites that offer pirated manga titles. We simply can’t recommend and discuss those sites here. If you happen to own the work you want to put on your Kindle, you are better off using a software package like Mangle to optimize your manga files for your Kindle. Many websites have published detailed sets of instructions on ways one can read Manga on Kindle. Here are the instructions from Mangle’s official website:

Add images to the current book by selecting the “Book | Add | Files” or “Book | Add | Directory” menu items

If certain images are not in the order you want, select them in the window, and select the “Book | Shift | Up” or “Book | Shift | Down” menu items

Configure the book title and image processing options by selecting “Book | Options”; this will be the title you see in the Kindle home menu

Create a root-level directory on your SD memory card/Kindle called “pictures” (case might matter)

Once you are satisfied with the your images and options select “Book | Export” and select the “pictures” directory you just created

After the export is complete your new manga books will show up along with all your other books (if they don’t for some reason, press Alt+Z while on the home menu)

That’s all it takes. You don’t need an iPad to be able to read manga digitally without needing your computer.

Have you ever ordered a Kindle e-book by accident? Maybe you picked up a Kindle book only to realize it has issues or is not worth what you paid for it. Many e-book buyers assume that all their purchases are final. That is not the case with Amazon. The company has one of the best customer service teams around. As long as Kindle content buyers contact Amazon’s customer service within its 7-day return period for Kindle content, they should have no trouble returning their Kindle e-books and getting their money back:

Once a refund is issued, you will no longer have access to the item. Returning gift content is possible as well. You just have to let Amazon’s customer service team know that you want a gift card in exchange for returning your gift:

This process is offered for legitimate returns. You do not want to abuse the system. If you need to return your Kindle e-book, don’t wait.

In a perfect world, Kindle would support all kinds of documents. Unfortunately, that is not the case at this point. Many of our readers have written to us about ways one can go about converting DJVU files to a format compatible with Kindle in the past:

I have a couple of books in DJVU format. Unfortunately, I can’t open them on ipad or Kindle. Any way to convert them?

If you have DJVU files sitting on your hard drive, you want to convert them to PDF before transferring them to your Kindle (you don’t want the finished PDF file to be too huge either). DJVU to PDF converter is a decent piece of software that can get the job done.

As long as you have a PDF printer software on your computer, you should have no trouble converting your DJVU files to PDF. WinDjView software is another useful software application if you plan to play around with DJUV files. Just watch out for the size of your converted files as big PDF files can be problematic on Kindle and other e-readers.
