Android On Kindle – Can It Happen?

I have said in the past that Android can be what Amazon has been waiting for the move Kindle to the next level. With Android apps, Amazon Kindle can have access to plenty of applications (and their developers) to enhance user experience on Kindle. Now can it happen?

Android is currently designed for Mobile phone, but there is no reason Kindle can’t handle Android. I think the big problem for Amazon is figuring out how to get out of their “closed” system without losing their competitive edge (the e-book market). Amazon’s current software is designed to drive sales for the Kindle store. While there is no question that the same features can be implemented on any OS, I am not sure Amazon is ready to put Android on Kindle. I think Android can boost Kindle beyond what we have seen so far from Amazon ( and it may lower the prices too). But I’d be surprised if any version of Android made it to Kindle before the summer of 2009.

So what do you guys think? Is Android the magic pill Amazon needs to take Kindle to the next level?

If you are asking if Amazon should use Android as an OS for Kindle then I would say it might need a bit more processing power.

But if you are saying that Amazon needs to port the Kindle platform to Android like they did with iPhone then I shout an emphatic yes! Currently there are only four eReaders available in the Android Market and they are subpar at best. With all the different ebook formats out there tis amazing that they are still surviving.

I also think that text book publishers should ebook all of their textbooks for students that want a greener solution. Remember the 50 lb backpack that only had 3 books in it? Imagine being able to carry an entire bachelors degree worth of textbooks on Kindle! then take it a step further carry them on your phone!

I would take the port to Android one step further. Plugging an android phone into a PC would give the ability to run a portable version of Kindle from the phone but displayed on the PC screen. Similar to Portable Apps that many have on their thumb drives. This would mean students and everyone else would be able to read and reference on the go and pull up full screen sized books when they need to.

just my two cents :)

I had both in mind. There is no reason to only give iPhone love. Android’s base will grow, and Amazon wants to sell more books :) You seem to be an Android fan. Would you be interested to turning your two cents into a guest post on K.indled? :)
