Amazon to preempt Sony Ebook PSR-700

Rumors are again going around that Amazon may be thinking about rolling the new Kindle out early to combat the launch of Sony’s latest eBook reader. Sony makes major improvements over other Sony eBook readers with the introduction of a finger-touch screen for Sony PSR-700 reader. One thing I like about PSR-700 is the large screen, and it does look to have been designed better than the Kindle. It also comes with the backlit feature that hardcore Kindle fans have been asking Amazon for to no avail.

Now here is the downside. Sony does not have the power of Kindle store behind its product, and the device is going for $399, which is more expensive than the Kindle. I think Sony’s eBook readers have great potential, but Sony needs to think strategically to try and make an ecosystem around their products instead of making minor improvement.

I don’t think Amazon will be too worried about the PSR-700, Kindle’s real competition will be when Sony adds wireless capability’s to its reader similar to the Kindle, WIFI is good — but not good enough. Without that ‘killer’ feature, all the other updates to the PSR-700 are superficial.

So two downsides:

1) Limited selection

2) No wireless…thus buying directly is out and getting subscriptions sent without a computer is a bust…

Now, aren’t these the primary reasons many went with the Kindle???

Exactly. Sony got started way before Amazon in the eBook market, but they just do not have any clue how to actually play for the market.

Sony does not understand eBook readers. It has gone through three upgrades, 500, 505, and 700 and still does not provide dictionary support. The only thing Sony got right about the PRS-700BC is that it truly belongs to 700 BC – the Babylonian times.

I would say that Sony has lost its ways in the past few years. Talk about Walkman which didn’t quite get it done. PS3 is still struggling, and Sony Reader.
